Reading should be fun. I repeat this regularly to parents and teachers – if you can make reading fun, you've made a reader for life. Reading should be an exciting experience but all too often a child's only reading experience is dry, sometimes dull textbook material. This type of book, while it has its function, won't convince any child as to the joys of reading.
Kids need "hands-on" fun when it comes to books.
Have you ever wanted to do a reading activity with your child or class only to find that you had to track down 25 items or resources just to do so or it took more time than you had to complete the activity?
As a
librarian, I'm consistently disappointed when I hear kids complain about reading; so I decided to develop some simple, frugal, and fun book activities to spark their interest in books.
All of these activities were designed to enable anyone on a limited budget to create exciting reading projects that give children the incentive to keep reading.
Here are
some proven children favorites that will help you get kids excited about books:
Book Puzzles – Children love puzzles and book puzzles can easily be made using different materials.
Use old dust jackets discarded from public or school libraries, or have children draw colorful book scenes. Draw odd connecting shapes on the pictures to create the puzzle. Laminate for durability if desired and cut out the pieces. Store each puzzle in a zipped sandwich bag and label.
Animal Cracker Scenes – Make an attractive book scene with animal crackers, a paper plate, and any type of frosting.
Divide frosting into several small containers and add a different color of food coloring to each. Using fingers or a spoon, "paint" a frosting picture on the paper plate and press the animal crackers into the painted scene. You can also spread a small amount of frosting on the back of each animal cracker and "paste" them onto the already drawn scene on the paper plate.
Book Coasters – Reuse frozen juice lids to make unique book coasters. First, cut a paper circle the size of the lid in any color
desired. Cut a piece of felt the same size and glue to the bottom of the lid. Draw a book scene, character, or title desired on the circular paper piece, laminate, and glue to the top of the lid to create durable
coasters.
Book Pennants – Children enjoy making book pennants out of construction paper or craft paper. Cut paper into the shape of a
pennant. Draw scenes from a favorite book on these and write slogans that encourage reading such as "Books are #1," "Reading is For Winners," etc. Hang in child's room or classroom.
In a classroom setting, you might have a contest and let the children vote on their favorite pennant. My students and I have designed some really creative ones over the years.
